Applications are invited for a 3.5 year fully funded PhD studentship in theoretical soft condensed matter physics to work with Prof. Suzanne Fielding in the Department of Physics at Durham University.
The full time studentship includes a stipend of £14,777 per year, fees and support for research costs and conference travel.
Drawing on concepts of statistical mechanics, fluid dynamics and nonlinear dynamical systems theory, the project will seek to understand the dynamical processes whereby soft materials yield and start to flow, with a particular focus on concepts of avalanching and material failure. The application of concepts of yield stress rheology to active soft materials such as biological tissues may also be considered. Depending on the interests of the applicant, the project could be mainly computational, or combine numerics with analytical work.
Applicants should have or expect to attain a good first or upper second class integrated masters or a good first class bachelor’s degree in physics, mathematics, or a related subject.
