Mathematical and BIo-SoftRobotic modelling of microbes / Gadelha / Bristol UK
Fully funded PhD for UK/EU students with an imminent deadline. It’s a fantastic opportunity for a student willing to work between theory and experiments, with exciting potential in soft-robotics in the top Engineering school in the UK.
*Closing date: 7th October 2019*
Interviews: 9th October 2019
*PhD project: * *Mathematical and Bio-SoftRobotic modelling of microbes: theory and experiments*
This PhD aims to revolutionise “SoftRobotics” by constructively combining engineering mathematics, cellular biology and active soft-matter to create the first generation of macroscopic robotic “cells » that are able to self-adapt and perform complex tasks unsupervised, very much like cells in our body. This truly interdisciplinary project will merge experimentation, mathematical modelling and simulation, physics, engineering, robotics and biology.
*Details:* Covers tuition fees, tax-free stipend of £14,777 per year plus a travel/consumables budget
*Duration:* 3.5 years with *January start*
*Eligibility:* First Class or Upper Second Class Honours degree. The candidate needs to meet the standard *RCUK residency requirements* ( epsrc.ukri.org/skills/students/help/eligibility/): either home UK students, or EC nationals who have lived in the UK for 3 years prior to starting the PhD (and if the 3 years have been spent in higher education, then they have to have been resident in the EEA or Switzerland immediately before this).
*Applicant’s degree:* *Maths, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering*, or related subjects.
